You can only learn a magic (or an upgrade of a magic(more on that later)) if a. someone teaches you the magic or b. its your starting magic.
Learning Upgrades
You can learn in upgrade a magic in the following ways:
1. If youve known a magic for at least 3 months
2. If someone teaches you an upgrade to a magic they taught to you previously.

correction to the last post. If the magic is basic (i.e. water, fire, dark) anyone can learn it with time, having it as a starter magic just helps you to learn and master the magic faster. But if it is a specialty
(i.e. sand, ink, poison) you will need someone's help.

For example, all last year, juel kept on using lightning magic on M3 repeatedly. I kept on building a resistance to it and, eventually, i learned it (it being lightning).

Although, it took alot of lightning for him to even build a resistance (I was using it on him every day for around 2-4 months before his resistance started)

I was lucky enough to evade such attacks, seeing as i didn't need to breath.
If that confuses you, then you should ask about voids
Also the starter elements that you begin with should be advanced in mote quickly
Ex:dark chaos
As well as those invented
Ex: tenchai

So, with the some of the back story posted, my character was first tenchai, but then developed an abillity to talk to wind (he does not know wind magic). Then his water abilities showed up (dragonifoire). He started going crazy (chaos). His water progressed to ice. He finally snaps as his dark side takes over (dark). His powers are stripped only leaving basic dark, chaos, and ice (while in dragon form). He regained tenchai, and focused on it.
That's how my magic came about!

wow...
my turn!
started with lightning and Holy. Learned a little water magic early on, but never really went anywhere with it. Discovered Never magic. Learned fire magic from Axell after developing a resistance. Ultimate form unleashed the powers of High Voltage which eventually led to residual High Voltage for M3 to learn from. Eventually developed a resistance to Nova and learned Nova from Axell.
